Writing Exposition

A story, any story, requires three elements: the plot, characterization and the setting.  Each of these must be equally strong in order to make a gripping story.  If one is weak, the other two become wobbly and your story fails to become all it could be.  In this first workshop we want to set the stage.  This is the easiest of writing skills to master, yet in many cases seems to be the most neglected.  As writers we tend to concentrate on plot and character and forget the setting.  However, in real life, settings influence our mood, our energy, and what we can accomplish.  It is the same in our fiction.  Our protagonist cannot freeze to death in a red room.  The hero cannot swing to the maiden’s rescue if the author has not placed the chandelier in the room - or other suitable swinging material.  So, one of the most important parts of any story or novel is its setting.

# 2

Character Development

A story or novel is supported by three pillars, the setting, the characters and the plot.  In this workshop we will take a look at the character element.  Characters are the soul and heart of our writing.  They are the element that connects directly with the reader and they are the key to a powerful story.  Well written, well developed characters are vital to our work.  If we can give the reader well developed, realistic people, the reader will connect with them and remember them for years, possibly even the rest of their lives.  A writer becomes committed to his/her characters.  How often have you heard an interview of a novelist and he/she spoke of his/her characters as living, breathing people?  This is the depth of commitment a writer must put into his characters and the longer the project the more commitment is called for on the part of the author.  A short story will give us just a flash of a character; a novel is an in depth study of the character’s life.

# 3

The Plot
and Getting It Started

When we think of writing, it is the plot line that springs immediately to mind.  This guy will go to Egypt and find a pharaoh’s grave and discover treasure and then the pirates will come and try to steal the treasure and he will…You get the idea.  The first thought we have of writing is usually the plot.  This is natural because without a series of events we have no story.  Therefore, we come to the question:  How do I create an entertaining series of events that my readers will enjoy and that will have them looking for more of my writing?

Writing Dialogue

One of the biggest challenges to any writer is creating distinctive, realistic dialogue.  Dialogue is an essential skill and as writers, we need to master it in order to give our characters separate, individual voices with which to speak.  With a little training you will find that it becomes one of the most enjoyable of all the writing that you do.
