A short excerpt from Attacked: The package arrived one morning, about four months later. It was on her desk when she arrived at work. Wrapped in brown paper, it was roughly twenty-two by thirty centimeters, and not more than two in depth. A courier company label with her name on it was affixed to the middle of the package. There was no return address. Laura Taylor stuck her head out of the office door and spoke to the receptionist: “Meg, when did this package arrive?” “First thing this morning Laura. I hardly had time to sit down before the courier arrived.” “There’s no address on the label. How did he know where to bring it? Was there a receipt or something?” “No ma’am. He didn’t even ask me to sign for it. Told me the sender didn’t want a record of it and gave him the address verbally.” “Okay, thanks.” Returning to her desk, Laura Taylor sat, looking at the package for some time. At last, deciding it wasn’t a bomb and that she knew where it came from, she tore the bundle open. She was right, Greg Wilson’s signature was on a plain sheet of paper attached to what appeared to be some sort of manuscript. She picked up the paper and read: Dear Ms. Taylor, By the time you receive this, I will no longer be the sick old man I was when we met a few months ago. After reconsidering our discussion, I changed my mind and decided to give you what you asked for: the truth as I know it about that day. Therefore, I put it on paper and arranged for Sam to forward the package to you after my funeral. Giving you this story does not change my mind about you publishing it. Perhaps after you and that someone important you promised to get the truth for read this, you will fully realize why. Greg Wilson Laura placed the package in her briefcase and left her office. “Meg, I am going home to work on the contents of the package I received. I need to study it and decide what to do. I’ll be back tomorrow.” “Yes, Ms. Taylor.” Laura’s mother was quite surprised to see her home so soon. “Laura dear, what is it? What’s the matter? Why are you home again?” “I have it mom. I have the story, the truth I promised you.” “You mean about…?”
“Yes, I do!
Sit while I read it to you.” |
