Story: Buryin’ Day Today, was published in FREEFALL MAGAZINE (www.freefallmagazine.ca)
in May, 2009 and, in December, 2009, was submitted by the publishers to the
national JOURNEY PRIZE competition. It is the suspense-filled story of a young
woman who, on a routine trip to the UBC campus, soon regrets choosing ‘this day,
this bus.’
Process to get it published: I entered this story in Freefall’s annual short
story competition and won second place. I found out about that competition (and
about Wyn Lit) from the Canadian Writers’ Contest Calendar which is available
annually from White Mountain Publications.
Article: Have and Have Not was published twice, in THE PLACENTIA CHARTER (www.thecharter.ca)
in May, 2009 and in the DOWNHOME (www.downhomelife.ca) magazine in December,
2009. THE CHARTER is a small paper based in my hometown and the DOWNHOME is a
well-known east coast magazine published in St. John’s. Have and Have Not is a
portrait of memories—my father’s and mine—and an offshoot of research for an
in-progress novel which is set in Argentina, NL. It documents some of the
upheaval created in the lives of the residents of Argentina during WWII when
their tiny fishing/farming community was transformed, almost overnight, into a
strategic U.S. naval base.
Process to get it published: I initially sent this article just to DOWNHOME,
waited a month, called the magazine and asked if they would mind if I also
submitted the article to THE CHARTER … just a courtesy call, but it was worth
it. The DOWNHOME said go ahead and that they would still consider the article
for publication. THE CHARTER accepted the article immediately and asked if I
would mind if they published it in two parts. (Of course I did not mind … why
have your work published for one week when you can have it published for two?)
After a while, I gave up on the idea of the article being printed in the
DOWNHOME but, nine months after I submitted it, it appeared!
Bio:
I was born and raised in Placentia, Newfoundland and am very proud of my
Newfoundland heritage. I now live in British Columbia, but watch NTV daily news
and read the monthly Newfoundland “Downhome” magazine.
My first love was books and I learned to read by following my busy mother around
the house, pointing at a word and saying “What’s that word, Mommy?” As soon as
she told me, I repeated the procedure. At that time, I was too young to go to
school but wanted to go so badly that, one day, I followed my older sister right
into her grade one classroom. The teacher, Sister Mary Marilyn, was very
kind—even let me read to the class—but then she sent me home. After an
interminable year of waiting, I was old enough to attend and I loved school. To
this day, I am very grateful for the excellent education provided by the
Presentation Sisters and lay teachers of St. Edward’s Elementary and of Sacred
Heart and Laval High Schools.
I attended three universities: Mount Allison (B. Music) in NB, where I met my
wonderful husband, David; the University of Manitoba (Cert. Ed.) in Winnipeg,
where I taught music in the Fort Garry School Division; and, the University of
British Columbia (M. Ed.) in Vancouver where I began my BC teaching career as a
substitute teacher.
For many years, I taught grades four to seven at Capitol Hill Elementary School
in Burnaby. My duties there included: Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Drama,
Public Speaking), Music (Choir, Recorder, Orff, Guitar, Musical Production and
Direction, Concerts, Assemblies) as well as all other subjects in the
intermediate curriculum.
And now, I am channelling my love of books and the many skills I acquired as an
educator into my second career—writing!
I am a Personality
and Human Relationships (PRH) Educator. I have been licensed to give personal
growth workshops and counselling for over 25years. During that time, I have
written workshops and other growth work material for my own use and that of my
organization. I have also submitted reflections for the Writer’s Spiritual page.
I am a supporter and sponsor of Wynterblue. Since my husband has become a
Wynterblue author, I am putting my gift as an editor to good use by being his
first line editor and chief supporter. Often, I do his typing if he has written
something long hand.

Article: House of Tools... was
published in the current issue of Looking Back Magazine (Feb/Mar 2010)...I
originally submitted it to Good Old Days Magazine www.goodolddaysmagazine.com
back in the fall...when they accepted it for publication, that’s where I
expected it to be published even though I knew about the sister magazine,
Looking Back...it is a memoir of my grandfather’s tool shed and some fond
recollections of Grandpa...the magazine is located in Indiana and has a
circulation of over 300 000...
Publishing process:.. I found this magazine in a book called The Best of the
Magazine Markets for Writers. The 2010 edition lists 1,842 of the best freelance
markets. Each source gives full details of what they expect and submission
procedures...I received an acceptance in about six weeks...not bad for a first
time submission....I sent the ok back and got paid within a few weeks...
Story: Attacked... this story, a novella about a group of young boys who grow
into manhood seeking revenge on the mercenaries who attacked and burned their
village, killing everyone but them in the process. While they watched in horror
from their campsite on a nearby mountain, they vowed to avenge those lost in the
raid. It is a story that grew out of an idea I had for a short story of about
1500 words.
Publishing process:... this story was to be included in my collection Wishes
Come True, which is some of my stories that made the win Lit 24’s, some that
didn’t, and some, like Attacked, that were never part of the contests....Maggie
saw it for the first time when she was type setting for Wishes. She called me
and said this story needs to be in its own book and so Wynterblue published it
in Dec. And now, my wife, and the Magpie have me working on a sequel....hah

In October 2009 I
was accepted to write articles for Suite 101.com.
The address to my articles is:

Since
self-publishing SARA, a Canadian Saga with the assistance of Wynterblue
Publishing I find myself in a position where I need to 'blow my own horn' , so
to speak, in order to generate sales. Wynterblue's new Braggin' Writes Page
gives me an opportunity to promote SARA and a chance to tell you about other
things I have done so far.
Two years ago I retired from the working world where I experienced filling the
roles of secretary, teacher, psychotherapist, business owner, and legal
transcriptionist. I do like to be kept busy but in my younger adult days my
motivation to multi-task came from the fact that, as a single mom, I simply
needed the money.
Since childhood I have enjoyed writing stories. And this joy stays with me in my
retirement years. My educational background is in psychology. I am a self-taught
writer and, in spite of the flaws this may create in my efforts, I have enjoyed
some writing success.
I have had four poems published; one of them way back in 1994 entitled BEYOND
TIME which was published in Empowerment Magazine, Toronto. Two of my poems found
their way into White Mountain Publications anthologies; Sylvan Jottings in 2006
and Moments in Time in 2008. The fourth poem entitled IN THE FOREST was
published in Wynterblue Publications' Confab 2. In addition I currently have two
of my poems on Wynterblue's Christian Theme Page.
Also since retiring I wrote my first one-act play entitled CHOCOLATE COOKIES. It
was presented by Elliot Lake's local theatre group, ELATE, and I was thrilled
when it was performed in a dinner theatre format by local actors. Twice it was
well received at the Fireside Inn and once at Dennison House.
Several years ago I enjoyed sales in Toronto outlets of two audio tapes. I wrote
and read the material in the tapes. One was entitled The Psychic Within on
Meditation and the second The Psychic Within on Developing your Psychic Power
Way back in the eighties my short story entitled THE ISLAND WAY OF LIFE won the
Prince Edward Island CBC writing competition and was presented on the CBC radio
station.
I feel honoured that five of my stories are published in Wynterblue's Confab 2.
To date six short stories have qualified to be published in Confab 3 and for two
years running I have survived WynLit 73 and look forward to the publication of
my two novellas.
My short story entitled What Christmas Means to Me was published in Elliot
Lake's local newspaper, The Standard, just prior to Christmas 2009. I have had a
news article published in a Christian publication and in 2009 I surprised myself
by writing and delivering my very first sermon in the Holy Trinity United
Church, Elliot Lake.
My focus today is on continuing sales of SARA and I keep very busy working to
complete my second novel. It is entitled REAWAKENING which is a very unusual
love story. I look forward to having this novel self-published with the
assistance of Wynterblue Publications and I plan its launch to take place in
this years Word on the Street in Toronto.
