About Wynterblue and its Founder

My name is Maggie Lacroix and I founded Wynterblue Publishing, a not-for-profit publishing house, in order to create an umbrella of support and publishing venues to every author within Northern Ontario primarily and Canada in general. Wynterblue is based in Callander, ON.

I am the author of My Firefly (ISBN: 9781894747455) available in its second printing through  my publisher's website: White Mountain Publications in New Liskeard. Copies may be purchased through our store as well.

Our Mandate is to serve authors from Northern Ontario and across Canada.

Now, a bit more about Wynterblue:

Our Board of Directors:

Jim Kirton - President
Sheila Pratt - Secretary
Maddy Portuguese - Treasurer
Garfield McAdam - Fundraising Director

Wynterblue Publishing Goals

As a nonprofit incorporation, Wynterblue Publishing, with funding from sponsors like you, will provide the following services:

1. Through membership, we will develop a membership base of authors and readership to assist us in creating funds to be used toward our offered services.

2. We will develop an Author’s Grant which authors will be able to apply for through their memberships. This grant will be based on available funds and will be used by authors in accordance with any regulations laid out by the Wynterblue Publishing Board of Directors. We will invite the public readership to sponsor writers through Sponsorship Grants. This is a very detailed endeavour and includes the ability for the Sponsor to directly communicate with the author to encourage that author through the process of writing a complete manuscript. This sponsorship will allow the author the freedom to sit and write instead of worrying about rent money etc. The projected average Sponsorship will likely not be more than $3000.00 per author per project.

3. Wynterblue Publishing will provide Tutoring and Mentoring to assist authors with their on-going works.

4. We will provide authors with yearly writer’s retreats to assist and encourage their creative writing endeavours.

5. Because we cannot physically or financially publish every author who approaches us with a manuscript, we will instead assist that author in every possible way to have a complete, professional and edited manuscript. We will assist them with the market research required to find the correct publisher/s to which they should submit. As well, having worked that closely with the author and seeing that the manuscript meets Wynterblue Publishing standards, we will write a letter of reference on behalf of the author to the publisher of their choice elsewhere in Canada. This goal will create a strong web of support between Wynterblue Publishing and the other publishing houses across Canada. There is never a guarantee that another publisher will accept the work for publication, however, this process will possibly bring the author’s work to the top of the slush pile.

6. We will hold regular writing contests to promote the actual ‘act’ of writing. Writing contests clean out the pipes and get the creative juices flowing – something that is dearly needed in every writer’s career. The first big event we have been planning for Wynterblue Publishing (for late 2007 – early 2008) is a 3 Day Novel Writing Contest which will be held here in North Bay. When announcements for this event are sent out, it will have mass publicity across northern Ontario. It is still too early to give any times or dates, however, the feed back regarding the competition has been overwhelming to say the least and we expect a good turnout for the event.

7. With the funding for which we will be applying, we will offer publishing to all authors on a print on demand basis by publishing limited print runs of their works. Using this form of publishing reduces publishing expenses to a minimum and allows us greater freedom with the other services we want to provide to our authors.

8. The Wyn Lit Newsletter will continue to be our publicity venue throughout North Bay and the north and will be provided to the entire membership via internet.

9. The Wynterblue Publishing website will be our main source of communication with membership. Members will be updated about contests, retreats, workshops and seminars, announcements etc. through the website. We are hoping to be able to provide a chat room, a community board etc. through the website as well.

10. Wynterblue Publishing will publish a literary magazine: Wt~ Blue Sky Region a paying, fictional, short story and poetry publication. We will increase the subscription base through membership.

11. Wynterblue Publishing will also create the Life’s Journey Project will be further developed to simplify the memoir writing process for the elderly through workshops held in Senior’s gathering places.

12. A reading program will be developed where volunteers sit and read to small groups of children and seniors in various situations including women’s shelters and Children’s Aid organizations, hospitals, etc.

13. Writing for Mental Health workshops will be brought to hospitals and institutions. This workshop will be developed and adapted to serve the men and women in transition houses, victims of abuse, etc.

14. We will be holding workshops and seminars for the author membership as well as for writers across Canada through our National Arts Service Designation. We have access to many speakers who are greatly interested in the written voices of Northern Ontario as well as Canada.

15. We will develop and maintain yearly Youth Words Scholarships for students who wish to further their studies in Literature.

16. The Youth Words Treasury project has already been developed and will be implemented in the school systems throughout the north to assist elementary school students in not only recognizing their writing potential, but to also assist the participating schools in raising funds for their own special projects.

The Northern Ontario Young Writer’s Association will be developed for students participating in secondary and post-secondary education. The age limits for this association is 16-21. The purpose of this association is to encourage the development of young writers who would like to build a career in the fields of journalism and creative writing; script and screen play writing, etc.

Through the writing industry, many other fine and visual arts industries come into play, for example, artwork. Our publications will require artwork (children’s books, cover art, etc.) and because of this, we will hold regular art contests to serve a dual purpose:

A. We will create that much more awareness to Wynterblue Publishing
B. The contests will give us better access to Northern Ontario artists
C. Northern Ontario art will enhance Northern Ontario literature
