Theme Subject

"Teddy Jr. Lives!"

Teddy the Toad Jr. lives peacefully in a toad house built by young Hunter. It was built with a clay flower pot turned on its side - tipped slightly to keep the water out - and with bits of moss and bark to keep Jr. cool.

Little Jr. does his job well - with only one problem: In the process of performing his bug-guard duties, he ended up with a small blister on one of his toes and because of it, he developed somewhat of a permanent limp-hop. Gustav, the grand daddy of all arrogant Longlegs promptly notified the garden community about the crippled toad and challenged Jr. to a bug catching competition. Gustav was only permitted to use his web and Jr. was only permitted to use his hop. The competition was to be held at dawn in two days. . .

Remember: just because this will be written for youth does not mean that it should be written with "baby talk" or "talking down" to the reader. Keep it simple. Less is more, as they say. Let your words paint the pictures that will ultimately belong with your story.

NOTE:    Perhaps some of you remember the devastating event last year when our beloved Jim accidentally ran over (murdered) and squished (flattened beyond recognition) Teddy the Toad. Teddy lived in the garden until the so-called accident but, it appears that one of his offspring has filled the vacancy left behind after Teddy's untimely demise. . . Many beautiful stories, including the follow-up trial and conviction of Teddy's murderer, were written by you - it will be wonderful to see what you'll write about his offspring. . .

"Destination: History"

  • The following excerpt has been taken from Wikipedia:

Iroquois Falls is a small town in Northern Ontario, Canada, with a population of 4,729 (Canada 2006 Census).

The town centre lies just off of Hwy 11 on the banks the Abitibi River, west of Lake Abitibi. Timmins, one of the largest cities in northern Ontario is approximately 50 kilometers (31 mi) to the west. The following communities are also within the municipal boundaries: Monteith, Nellie Lake, and Porquis Junction.

The Monteith Correctional Complex still exists in Monteith to this day. The prison facility uses farming, animal husbandry and many other venues to assist in rehabilitating the prisoners.

The following has been taken from word of mouth legend as well as from those who were there or whose parents had been there and related the stories to them. Either way, the fact remains that the Monteith Correctional Complex has a vivid and colourful history - much of which is sworn to be the truth.

The Monteith Correctional Complex was also used to house Japanese prisoners of war (fact). These prisoners used their creative abilities to build beautiful furniture and create stunning art (fact). The prisoners were used to assist in road and railway development as well as in the growth of the facility itself (fact). They were responsible for all aspects of rearing their own beef, poultry and even vegetables during the short growing seasons (fact).

Many POW's died in Monteith during those years - most of natural causes and some at the hands of violence. Yet, through their struggles, they clung to their culture and their skills, their hopes, dreams and loves - and their mysteries . . .

Based on an interview with Jacob:

Jacob was serving his time in the early 1960's. He was a 20 year old alcoholic, looking for a place to dry up along with some free rental space for the duration.

During his time there, the old barn at the prison was due to be torn down and Jacob's job was to assist in taking off the barnboards from the hayloft floor. In the process of pulling off a board, he found 7 small, flat stones with Japanese calligraphy.

In his own words in March 2001:

"I pulled at one and it just broke off. A tinder box, that damn barn. Good thing they tore it down. When it came off I found them, all seven of them. I got them translated by a pretty young thing down in Toronto when I got out . They're only seven letters from the alphabet: A, S, T, H, M, Y, J. I don't have a clue what they mean."

Jacob died from illness caused by prolonged alcohol abuse in October 2001. It is said that he skipped the 7 stones into the Abitibi River. He said that was where they belonged.

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, consists of two choices:

    1. Tell us about the POW that wrote the 7 letters, what they mean and why he hid them in the hayloft.
    2. Tell us about Jacob and the role the 7 letters played in his life.

After breakfast, she goes back to her room and picks up her suitcase letting everyone know that she is off to see her handsome young fiancé in England. By suppertime, she unpacks her suitcase, changes her clothes and talks about her 6 month visit to France - as if she had just returned from there. The next morning, the routine starts all over again . . .

"Destination: History"

  • The following excerpt has been taken from Wikipedia:

The Cypress Hills Massacre occurred on June 1, 1873, in the Cypress Hills region of Battle Creek, North-West Territories (now in Saskatchewan), involving a group of American wolf hunters or 'wolfers', American and Canadian whiskey traders, Métis cargo haulers or 'freighters', and a camp of Nakoda (or Assiniboine) people.

A large number of horses had been stolen from the wolfers just across the Montana Territory border. Angry over their loss, the wolfers attempted to track the horse thieves into Canada, but soon lost their trail. Instead, the wolfers arrived in the Battle Creek valley where the trading posts operated by Abel Farwell and Moses Solomon were located, opposite a camp of some 200 to 300 Nakota people. Tensions were already somewhat elevated, alcohol had been flowing freely on all sides, and a misunderstanding over a missing horse led to a mixed group of wolfers, whiskey traders, and Métis freighters opening fire on the Nakota camp, resulting in 23 confirmed Nakota deaths and the death of one wolfer, Ed LeGrace. Both trading posts were subsequently abandoned and burned. All of the "wolfers" were arrested and tried, but none were ever convicted.

Part of the site of the Cypress Hills massacre has been preserved at Fort Walsh National Historic Site, along with reconstructions of Farwell's and Solomon's trading posts.

You are a witness to the massacre and the events which led up to it; you know the truth about what happened and you have written the facts into your journal . . .

Dust Mops
copyright© reserved

Moaning and groaning wasn't gonna' do it. There was more to life than stirring the daily soup and scrubbing the toilet. But to all those who cared to see, it was, unfortunately, all she was capable of doing - and that barely. Her spirit was simply too light hearted, too forgiving, too easy to step on, to take seriously.

But despite that, stirring the soup was nothing she could do well. Scrubbing the toilet was something she abhorred. Wringing her hands in frustration was about all she could handle at the moment as she waited for the next explosion from hubby. And he would explode soon enough.

She was lazy. That fact wasn't up for argument. She tried to be like the other housewives but she also knew it was a useless effort. Something she didn't care to discuss. But the effort was there when the explosions came. Then, out of frustration she would rampage throughout the house and clean every dust ball from its comfortable corner.

Her light-hearted spirit took the explosion in stride. Forgiving, she was. It slid over her head and down her back and rolled off to the side somewhere without comment. She would not absorb it. She would not inhale it's bitter fragrance. She would not let it show that the explosion hurt. Instead, she would be forgiving and smile and nod her head and not whisper a word in her own defense.

It wasn't always like this. The dust balls never used to grow that big. The explosions used to come for other reasons. There was always a reason to explode.

This time, it seemed different somehow. This time the words that escaped from hubby's mouth were shocking. She had heard them before. But this time she listened. This time they entered through her nostrils and she inhaled them by mistake.

"You stupid, stupid whore. You are so stupid."

And his excuse was that it was her fault. She made him say it. If she didn't make him say it then he wouldn't have said it, he explained.

With the words still embedded deeply in her chest, she listened again. She heard the excuse, inhaling it too it spilled from his mouth.

"If it wasn't for you..."

Something happened that day. Something happened that didn't make sense. She exhaled the vapor. She exploded and the words fell from her lips: "I am not responsible for the things that come out of your mouth."

She sat back and waited for his reply. He tried over and over - again and again - to find the words to deny her remark. It was useless; he could find no words.

"I am not responsible for the things that come out of your mouth," she repeated.

Silence. The explosion had ended.

She left him sitting there and went to get the dust mop.

Not-So-Serious August Challenge #2:

Write a series of replies to the following letter written by Dr. Ted's friend and colleague, Dr. John Bunekheimer, regarding a patient that requires psychotherapy about a foot phobia. The following letter may be used in any way that suits the flow of your series of letters. Have fun with this one!

Genre: Fiction - humour

Word Count Max: 2500

Dear Ted,

It is very unprofessional of me to comment this way, but I almost busted a gut over this one! Why are you so lucky to get all the good ones? Hmm? I have worked my ass off for many years in the hopes of getting a few fucked up basket cases and I can't get get a single one. And what do you get? You get "
THE CASE OF THE CENTURY: Mr. X's Foot Phobia". I'm jealous.

My families are doing well. I have moved my 'Betty' family over to the west coast due to a close call recently with my 'Gertrude' family. Seems the kids met! Almost gave you a call over that one... Turns out I became so nervous about it that I couldn't sleep or even make love to Abigail. By the way, I should be making another appointment soon with you regarding Abigail. She would like to start a family and I would like to have your thoughts on that.

I realize that this may not have anything to do with Mr. X, but I was wondering if it would be possible to meet the doctor that subscribed the 'miracle foot powder'? I have developed a twitch in my left foot and it has caused me to become rather self conscious. At times, it causes me to break out in a cold sweat. Thank you.

Well I'm off. Going golfing with Winnifred this afternoon.

Take care, and love to your mommy.

Subject:      "The Carpenter"

It was a plain piece of wood. Its fibres streaked down the sides of it in haphazard lines that led nowhere....streaks of simple years, left embedded within its existence.
It told no story. It explained no lies. It simply had grown from the earth. Having spread its roots outward, it somehow remained inside of itself, pulling all things towards its heart.
It had no name. There was no need for such things. Others had given it titles and it accepted them without fuss.
The carpenter caressed the piece of wood with gnarled hands that ached. The wood comforted the carpenters hands, allowing itself to be formed. It took shape slowly, giving in to the roughness of the sand paper and the tools that rounded its edges.
And still the streaks showed through. Gracefully it laid upon the bench. It did not complain when the nails were driven into it. It did not make funny faces, when the glue was smeared onto it. It allowed itself to become a built thing.
And the carpenter worked. He spent days dreaming of what this thing would become. He had grown to love this piece of wood. He had grown to love its streaks. It had caused him to smile. And he chose it above all others to lay on the top of the thing, where eyes could behold its beauty.
When the carpenter was finished, the piece of wood shone with honey gold. Its streaks formed lines that dripped off the edges and fell into the air with ease.
He stood back and observed this thing he had built. He spoke to it: "You are beautiful," he whispered.
And in silence, the piece of wood answered humbly: "I used to have green wings that reached out for you, and you found me."
But the carpenter did not hear the words. Instead, he sighed, and reached out for another simple piece of wood. It was rough, with splintered edges. It told no story. It explained no lies. It caused the carpenter to dream again - it caused the carpenter to smile. . .

NOTE: Can you build a monologue (in the first person) for the carpenter, that tells us what he was thinking and feeling as he was working with this piece of wood? According to the above, he obviously works quietly . . . and alone. Remember that creativity comes from somewhere deep within us - something that we, as creative writers, truly understand - or do we indeed?

Subject:      "Verne and Thelma"

A rare occurrence was celebrated in the tiny village of Ramore on July 17, 1987: Verne and Thelma's 75th wedding anniversary.

Verne and Thelma spent their entire married life in a two room shack which had sunk into the ground. When it rained, the water leaked in under the door and flooded the entire shack. Long poplar poles were braced against it on two sides to keep it from falling over. The outhouse wasn't in much better shape . . .

For their anniversary, the village people gifted them with a shiny, new, two bedroom home, but three months after their anniversary, Verne and Thelma moved back to the old shack. Within six months, their bodies were discovered; their arms were comfortably wrapped around each other and their rubber boots were parked neatly at the foot of the bed in which they had died.

NOTE:     This is a love story, loosely based on fact. These two characters, although presented as fictional, must be believable. Imagine what it would be like to live with the same person for 75 years, and to still be in love after all that time. Be sure to answer the question as to why they moved back into their old home.

In 1920, Leon, a trapper, found what everyone else is always, always trying to find.  His knife, boots and journal were discovered scattered at the northern-most point of a small and insignificant lake.

Leon's journal and his legend is all that remains now. Some say that his spirit still haunts his journal  which was found wrapped tightly in a strange skin, tucked beneath a large boulder. No one has been able to read it completely through to the end.  Others say that his spirit haunts his boots - no one has been able to hold them without weeping. Still, others say that it's his knife that is haunted - although it is extremely sharp to the touch, it won't cut through warm butter.

About subject #4:
! ~ Celebrating Year #4 ~ !

Updated May 2010

~   This subject is geared toward character development over the course of one year.

About the main character:

The main character may be either male or female, youth or adult; but no matter which you choose, you must stay consistent for the duration.
This same character will be used for every story for the remaining 24's of this season.

About the story line:

Each story must be written in the first person only, no exceptions. Every month, your main character will tell a different story in his/her own voice.
There must be a common thread in all the stories no matter what subject matter you choose.
Every month your main character will be the focal point of a short story based on the subject matter of your choice provided in Subjects #1, 2, 3 or 4.
The main character must maintain all the same physical characteristics you gave him/her in the first story for the duration. In other words "he" cannot become a "she" without an operation! Be sure to justify your changes as your character develops and grows physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Your character can certainly age over the course of the year, but remember to justify the changes with a word or two that make the changes believable.
At the end of the year you will have a collection of 12 short stories based on the same character - in other words, you will have a book that will tell various tales based on your main character.

About the genre:

The genre that you choose for the first story must stay consistent throughout the course of the year (no matter which subjects you choose during the year). If you are writing youth fiction, it must stay that way. If you are writing horror fiction, religious, historical, romance, etc, it must stay that way!

About the winning stories:

#1 ~  Only stories based on your main character and written and submitted DURING a 24 are eligible to make the Wyn Lit 24 short list and inclusion in Confabulation 4 (spring 2011)

Your collection must be based on your main character.
Your collection must contain a common thread that binds the stories together.

Common Thread to be used for 12 stories:

Choose one of the following made-up words as your common thread to bind the stories together during the course of the next 12 months.
