sitting as upright as a penis in my

was Maggie thinking when she concocted that title

Tabernac!
Flotsamonel!
Did she assume
that we too
all had stormy steamy sexual experiences
coupled with natural disasters
which we could turn into grandiose poetry or prose

Have you ever wanted to commit mayhem on an innocent
electronic item? I struggled to open one eye, my gaze
skewering the red numbers blinking one zero colon zero zero.
My brain demanded I annihilate them, put them out of my
misery for once and ever. I didn’t remember setting the
alarm.

How Did Dottie Know?~ by Ann Savage
JUDGES PICK
for opening
paragraph::
Abundance - by Audrey Austin
I guess I'm what the so-called experts like to call an
empty-nester. Both daughters, Sandi and Carol, have left home and
are making their own way in the world. It has been years since
Jerry left and, though it isn't easy, I have finally accepted that
he is not coming back. I'm alone in the world and I feel lonely.
The forty-nine year old woman staring back at me in the mirror is a
caricature of the practical, purposeful person I used to be. I want
to slap her face.

Siren Song - by Aspen deLainey
Is there any sound more enticing to the kid inside you than the
ding-a-ling of an ice-cream truck on a hot summer day? Don’t you
find even the faintest ringing brings a rush of almost forgotten
childhood memories like laughter, change jangling, friendly
jostling, and shared sweet licks in shady nooks?

July 2010
AND THE WINNERS ARE:
(In no particular order - except
for the top three)
Note from Mags:
Well folks, for the first time in forty months of 24's, we've
had a tie for first place. We were concerned that the judges were
going to become violent and so a tie was called. In the end, they
all shook hands and are now patiently waiting for the stories from
Wyn Lit 24 #41. The entire event is worthy of becoming a 24 subject
- eventually. The first place stories and their authors are listed
in no particular order because I don't want the judges mad at me.
Ironically, as you'll notice, neither of the first place winners had
the best opening paragraph. Congrats Melissa, you won this one hands
down. And congrats to Aspen and Virginia for lighting a fire under
the judges' chairs - Well done! And thank you to all the contestants
- June and July are difficult for the 24's with so many of you on
holiday or out enjoying the beautiful weather. We had less than our
normal contestants for this 24 and so I simply assumed that the
judging will be a piece of cake.
Also, I've been asked:
How do you win the judge's pick for opening paragraph?
Well, it's like this -
1) it must make me want to read the entire story.
2) it gives me insight into the story - a small clue where
the story might be going.
3) it doesn't have too much information
4) it states facts that are backed up throughout the story
Hugs to all and happy
writing.
1. The Wedding Cake ~ by Virginia Winters
Love Lasts ~ by Aspen deLainey
2. The Dead Man in My Car ~ by Debra Porter
3. Until Death Do Us Part ~
by W W Walton
4. Rubber Boots ~ by Maria-Theresa Brunelle
5. Die in My Car ~ by Garfield McAdam
6. Becoming Bear - by Stacey Gadway
7. Honourable
Mention -
Where the Prize Lay ~ by Lori King
8. Disappearing Act ~ by Melissa Brownlow
9. One Friend ~ by Ann Savage
JUDGES PICK
for opening
paragraph::
Disappearing Act by Melissa Brownlow
"When death is staring you in the face, and you know
with absolute certainty that your time on this earth is at an end,
most people say they will do anything to stop it from catching up to
them. But let’s face it, “anything” is pretty vague, and I’m a gal
who prefers the concrete. So, I don’t ask you what you’d do to save
yourself. Nope, I ask you what your life is worth."

many scary movies."
