Legacy
Filled with fear, I am starting to feel
panicky and sick to my stomach. In my head, I yell and scream.
“Help! Help! Help me! I’m trapped down here! Help me!” I know it
is of no avail; it’s hopeless. If she buried me like she
promised, there’s not a soul anywhere around up there that could
help me. Besides, now my mouth is covered with duct tape forcing
me to breathe through my nose.
My yelling and screaming is mumbled. I want
to bang and scratch on the lid of my coffin, but I’m bound by
the rug and cannot use my arms or hands. There is no help for
me. The panic and fear overwhelm me and I pass out once more.
Some time later, when I reawaken, something
has happened, I am strangely calm and peaceful. I have no desire
to struggle or yell. I understand I must relax, stay still and
focus on the words and pictures. “What words and pictures?” I
ask myself.
“The ones in your head that depict
everything that ever happened in your whole life... You do know
that just before someone dies, their whole life flashes in front
of their eyes, reminding them of all the good and bad things
which occurred in their lifetime.”
It’s a voice from the past, the long
distant past. Thirty years, give or take a few either way. It’s
a kind, loving voice that belongs to someone who cared, and
still cares: Gran.
